Mexican Riviera

On Sunday, February 21, we departed from San Pedro on a 7 day Mexican Riviera cruise on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas. On the first day we explored the ship. When the kids saw the jogging track on deck 12, they ran around it racing each other.

Then we explored deck 13 and played a round of miniature golf.

Before sailing away, we took part in the muster drill, and Connor and Ryan were relieved to find out that we no longer have to wear life jackets during the drill. On past cruises, they always hated wearing the life vests.

Day 2 was a relaxing day at sea. The kids enjoyed the day at Ocean Adventure (the onboard kids’ center) and loved it. When we tried to pick them up, they wanted to stay longer, so I guess that is a good sign. The boys would not leave Ocean Adventure until it was closing at 10 PM each night. Below is a picture of the guys all dressed up for dinner.

Every night, Connor and Ryan wanted a hot dog for dinner and they got their ketchup in a smiley face. Royal Caribbean has a program available onboard called "My Family Time Dining" in which for dinner they would speed up the delivery of the kids meals so that they would have eaten their dinner in about 40 minutes at which point mom or dad could take them to the front of the dining room to meet an Ocean Adventure staff member to take them up to the kids center while mom and dad ate their main course and dessert at a leisurely pace.

On Day 3 we arrived in Cabo San Lucas. I woke up early to run on the jogging track, so I was able to enjoy the beautiful views as we sailed into port. I was also able to see many whales from the ship.

We gave the kids the choice to play in the kids’ center or walk around Cabo with Mom and Dad, but they wanted to play in the kids’ center. They wanted to go there every day, so it allowed us to enjoy the ports without the kids complaining that we walk too far.

In Cabo, we had to take tender boats to shore, so below is a picture of us on our way to shore.

And this bird just liked to watch me as I did laps around the deck, so I decided to take its picture.

On Day 4 we were in Mazatlan. It was another beautiful, sunny day. Each of the ports we visited was around 82 degrees and sunny. It was a nice break from cold rainy weather we left in California. We took a taxi to the Gold Zone (new shopping district) to spend the day walking around the shops. Back on the ship, we were out walking on the deck before dinner and took this picture of Connor and Ryan.

After dinner, the kids were picked up from the dining room by the kids’ staff. Also sometime during dinner the ship was boarded by pirates. The kids onboard joined the pirate crew, got made up and learned a pirate song. Then they performed on the promenade and then invaded the dining room for the late seating dinners.

You may notice that Connor and Ryan are the only kids without face painting and Ryan doesn't have his pirate hat either. My kids don't like to get dirty, so they didn't want their face painted. Ryan just didn't want anything to do with the hat either, but in the below picture, you can see that he did participate in the song and movements that went with it.

It was hilarious watching Connor while everyone performed the pirate song. All the kids were in pairs so they walked two-by-two holding hands. Connor was paired up with the girl in the picture below. All during the song, the girl was doing the song movements with her hands and Connor kept trying to grab her hand so he could hold it. So, no, Connor is not trying to grab her boob in the picture. He is just trying to hold her hand.

It was another beautiful, sunny day. Each of the ports we visited was around 82 degrees and sunny. It was a nice break from California cold rainy weather. We took a taxi to spend the day walking around the shopping district walking and wandering around.

Day 5 we were in Puerto Vallarta. There was a Wal-Mart across the street from the dock, so we checked that out before taking a taxi to the shopping district to wander the town.

Below is a picture of us taken at a beach near downtown.

Day 6 was a relaxing and fun-filled day at sea. Connor had been begging to go ice skating, so we finally made it to show our moves.

Connor had fun going around the rink once, then decided he was done. But, it did take us awhile to make it around once. Connor just doesn't have the balance down. I had to hold him up the whole time and even then he was flailing around, slipping and sliding.

Ryan was determined to do it himself and didn't want me to help him. He only fell once and kept going on his own after I helped him up.

Ed and I went rock climbing. Ed made sure I got pictures of him rock climbing because he knew no one would believe it otherwise.

And, we did more miniature golfing. Unfortunately we were not able to do the inline skating due to high winds.

Here we are all dressed up for the second formal night.

Day 7, our final day, was another day at sea. Ocean Adventure had a talent show in which Connor and Ryan participated in the talent show by singing Yankee Doodle.

In the evening there was the Enchanted Knights Parade on the Royal Promenade. Connor and Ryan just stared at all the parade characters (giants, trolls, walking trees, etc) in amazement. If you look closely at the below picture, you will notice it looks like Ryan has yellow eye shadow on his eye. He ran into a window ledge on the ship and got a black eye.

With this being our last night on the ship, we had to put our suitcases outside the door before going to bed. Connor and Ryan helped with that.

The next day when we were walking off the ship, Connor was very concerned because he realized we forgot our luggage, so we had to remind him that they put it outside our room so they take it off the ship for us.

First Half Marathon

On February 7, I ran my first half marathon.
The race was 13.1 miles through Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. It was a great experience and by the end I felt like... well, like I ran 13.1 miles. My legs were a bit tired and my achilles tendon sore, but other than that I felt great. The reason for running this race was as a practice for the full marathon I am running in July.

Since the race, I have signed up for two more half marathons in San Francisco. The first is the US Half on April 11 and the second is the SF Giant's Plate to Plate on June 12. Ed, Connor and Ryan are walking the SF Giant's Plate to Plate 5k in June. For signing up for the SF Giant's race, we also receive free tickets to the Giant's vs As game the evening before the race. I think that is the main reason why Ed wanted to sign up to do the 5k.
The full marathon is on July 25, 2010.
